A world where some individuals start showing powers those individuals are called Locks however they can not keep them under control unless they have a Key.

Without their Key, a Lock can become disoriented, losing hours at a time with no memory of where they were or what they did.

Some individuals are not aware they are either Lock or Key if they are in proximity of eachother on a regular base.

What are Lock & Keys

Locks

Locks are individuals born with latent abilities, but without a Key, these powers are unstable, incomplete, or dangerous. Their gifts are often tied to emotion or instinct, making control nearly impossible when they are unbonded. The presence of a Key stabilizes them, unlocking the full potential of their abilities and preventing them from jamming.

Many Locks do not realize what they are until they begin to lose time, experience uncontrollable outbursts, or meet someone whose presence calms the chaos inside them.

Traits of a Lock may include:

• Sudden memory lapses or time loss
• Emotional outbursts with unusual side effects
• Repeating actions or words without cause
• Feeling overwhelmed or overstimulated when alone
• A powerful attachment to someone who makes them feel „normal“

Some Locks fear the dependency their condition creates, others find purpose through the bond. What all Locks share, however, is this: their power does not belong to them alone. It must be shared to be controlled.

Keys

Keys do not possess powers of their own. Instead, they have a stabilizing effect on Locks—granting them clarity, control, and access to their abilities. A Key’s presence can ground a Lock, but the emotional or physical proximity required varies from pair to pair. A Key can not be affected by any Lock powers.

Keys themselves often have no idea they’re a Key until they bond with a Lock. Once the bond is formed, they tend to feel a sense of tethering, intuition, or awareness about their Lock’s state.

Traits of a Key may include:

• Calming presence
• Intuitive awareness of another’s state
• Unexplained draw to specific individuals
• Resistance to emotional disruption in others

The Bond

The connection between Lock and Key is not always romantic, but it is profound. Once formed, the bond behaves like an emotional gravity well. Locks will rarely stray far from their Keys, and vice versa. If forcibly separated, the Lock suffers first, potentially losing themselves or lashing out.

While temporary bonds can form, allowing short-term stabilization, true bonds are far more intense. A Lock will instinctively gravitate toward the Key they are most compatible with. If such a Key appears, the Lock may abandon weaker or temporary links.

Effects of a True Bond:

• Synchronization (physical or emotional)
• Minor sensory changes (e.g., pulse matching, shared dreams, or mirrored reflexes)
• External stabilizing markers (e.g., tattoos glowing, objects warming or vibrating)
• Unspoken awareness between Lock and Key

The System

Not everyone is a Lock or a Key. Some people are simply Unpaired neutral, unaffected by the Lock/Key dynamic. These individuals often live ordinary lives, though many feel envious or alienated by the dramatic relationships around them.

In some regions or cities, Lock and Key registration is mandatory. Governments or organizations attempt to control pairings, match compatible partners, or suppress „dangerous“ Locks. In others, underground networks hide rogue Locks or experiment with synthetic stabilizers to avoid dependency on natural Keys.

There are rumors of people functioning without Keys through implants, medication, or harsh training, but the side effects are severe.

Dangers & Stigma

Feral Locks:
Unbonded and volatile, some Locks live in isolation or are captured for safety.

Obsessive Bonds:
A Lock may become dangerously possessive of their Key, especially if the bond is newly formed or one-sided.

Key Burnout:
Though they appear normal, Keys can suffer emotionally, especially if supporting unstable Locks for too long or multiple times.

Illegal Key-Binding:
Some attempt to force bonds using ritual, trauma, or drugs. These are unstable, and often fatal.
